A Little Bit of Heaven in a Jar

Oh. My. Goodness. Have you ever tried this?

I was perusing the various nut butters recently, trying to settle on something to buy in addition to the ordinary everyday peanut butter we most often eat. I absolutely adore sun butter, but my children do not like it, and I wanted to find another alternative. As soon as I saw Dark Chocolate Dreams, I knew I had to try it.

I approached this new peanut butter as a once in a while lunch treat. A couple brown bag lunches later, I found myself wondering if this was the equivalent of slapping a few Reese’s into a slice of bread. I decided to do a little label comparison to see what I’ve gotten myself into.

Looking at the nut butters I have on hand, and a quick internet search on Reese’s, this what I found:

Smucker’s Natural Peanut Butter
2 T serving = 200 calories, 16 grams total fat, 2.5 grams saturated fat, 0 grams trans fat, 105 mg sodium, 2 grams fiber, 1 gram sugar, 7 grams protein

SunGold Natural Sun Butter
2 T serving = 200 calories, 16 grams total fat, 2 grams saturated fat, 0 grams trans fat, 120 mg sodium, 4 grams fiber, 3 grams sugar, 7 grams protein

Peanut Butter and Company Dark Chocolate Dreams
2 T serving = 170 calories, 13 grams total fat, 2.5 grams saturated fat, 0 grams trans fat, 35 mg sodium, 2 grams fiber, 7 grams sugar, 6 grams protein

Reese’s Peanut Butter Cup
1 PB Cup = 102 calories, 6 grams total fat, 2 grams saturated fat, 0 grams trans fat, 62 mg sodium, 711 mg fiber, 9 grams sugar, 2 grams protein

Whew! The chocolate peanut butter holds up fairly well to the other nut butters. It does have more sugar, but I assumed that would have to be the case. Only slightly less protein. Since protein is what I’m after when I include a nut butter in a meal, I’m feeling okay about these findings. I think my original plan of a once in a while lunch treat will stand. I don’t want to eat the more sugary choice often, but I am okay with it as a less frequent lunch item. And, thank goodness, it does have some redeeming qualities that the Reese’s candy does not – more protein and more fiber.

Do you like to eat nut butters? What are your favorites?

    • Mmm. I didn’t see cinnamon raisin, but I did have a choice between white chocolate or dark chocolate. I will have to try the white chocolate wonderful when we run out of dark chocolate.

  1. You made me hungry. Unfortunately, I live in Poland and I can’t get it. We have not got so amazing things to eat. I’m mad now!
