Mind over Matter

Now if you are going to win any battle, you have to do one thing. You have to make the mind run the body. Never let the body tell the mind what to do. The body will always give up. It is always tired in the morning, noon and night. But the body is never tired if the mind is not tired.
~ George S. Patton, U.S. Army General, 1912 Olympian

I ran across this quote, and I think Patton’s words are encouraging for us when facing any kind of challenge. I think attitude makes such a huge difference in our lives, so I think there really is something to “mind over matter.” Any runners agree with me that sometimes the mind is more critical to finishing a run than the legs, heart or lungs? Sometimes it is the sheer determination to keep going that wins the day.

I love this quote, and I plan to keep it in mind to motivate me on those days when a training run is tough to get through, or when life in general is tough to get through.

Do you have any favorite quotes that motivate you?

  1. I agree with mind over matter – 100%. I have overcome physical exhaustion, through pure will and determination on multiple occasions. Another quote I think about on my tough runs is one used by the US Marine Corps – “Pain is weakness leaving the body”.
